After results from a nationwide business competition came in, Professor Andrew Bargerstock at Maharishi University of Management commented on the success of the MBA programme there.
For the third year in row, a team from the university's MBA Accounting programme finished in the top tenth percentile in a popular business simulation competition.
When asked what is responsible for this achievement and what the university has that other schools do not, Professor Bargerstock replied with a multi-tiered answer.
He said, 'Students here are highly engaged in the educational process.'
They participate in business simulations of different types to add an element of real-world experience to their education.
Professor Bargerstock added, 'We go on field trips and see best practices at regional companies. The students participate in case studies and case study discussions. [We have] small group projects and guest speakers.'
In addition, he said, 'We have a very rich educational environment. Students coming from all different countries around the world say our educational methodology is very different than anything they have seen before, certainly not like the ''lecture, memorize the notes, and come in and get tested on it'' system that is prevalent in many countries.'
But what truly sets Maharishi University of Management apart from other universities is its focus on the inner personal development of each student. As part of each school day, every student practises Transcendental Meditation, a technique for reducing stress and developing creativity and total brain functioning.
Professor Bargerstock said, 'I've heard from students that they think because of Transcendental Meditation they have been able to develop broad awareness and sharp focusing ability. . . . They feel that since they have started to meditate, they've been able to be better focused and yet not lose broad perspective. And this is clearly an attribute of a well-seasoned executive. So, many of them are reporting that the benefit of meditation . . . seems to be a contributing factor' in their success.
