Students of the MBA in Accounting programme at Maharishi University of Management explained the reasons why they think the programme is consistently successful.

This came in the wake of the results of a North American business simulation competition in which all four teams from Maharishi University of Management placed in the top tenth percentile. The simulation, called Foundation, requires integrated thinking and the students to work together to make business decisions.

According to the description on the website of Capsim, the company that created the competition, 'At the university and college level, Foundation is uniquely appropriate for all courses where a holistic understanding of business—above and beyond the primary focus of the course—is critical. With its emphasis on finance and the integration of individual business units, Foundation provides a solid framework for understanding business processes and decision-making.'

Professor Andrew Bargerstock, director of the MBA Accounting programme at Maharishi University of Management, revealed why the MBA department has been effective.

He said, '[The students] have had courses in leadership and teamwork that I think help facilitate their communication and their interactions—because in this kind of situation you might expect that there's a bit of controversy about what the path of action might be, so the students need to be able to communicate clearly.'

The practice of Transcendental Meditation is also a key factor, say both students and faculty.

Professor Bargerstock added, 'Because of meditation [the students] have been able to develop broad awareness and sharp focusing ability that helps them in this kind of scenario. There are so many reports that are generated . . . reports about balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, a variety of reports about product pricing, and market share. It's a lot to digest.'

But the students feel that since they have started to meditate, they've been able to be better focused and yet not lose broad perspective.

'This is clearly an attribute of a well-seasoned executive,' Dr Bargerstock said. 'So, many of [the students] are reporting that the benefit of meditation and the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme . . . seems to be a contributing factor, along with all the coursework they have during the MBA.'
