'The world of media is going through an historic and unprecedented change,' said Professor Gurdy Leete of Maharishi University of Management.

This is one reason why the launch of the new master's degree programme in Media and Communications is so timely, he said. Professor Leete is co-chair of the Media and Communications department. The new graduate programme will begin in autumn 2013.

'The world of film and video is becoming much more of an important part of the fabric of almost every part of commerce, education, industry, and daily life,' Professor Leete explained. 'There is tremendous demand and no one really knows how exactly it is going to develop, so creativity is at a premium. That is great for us because we have such a beautiful programme for connecting with the unbounded creativity within each student.'

He added that the new master's is a one-year programme and elaborated on the curriculum.

It starts with courses in Advanced Narrative and Screenwriting, then moves on to Sound, Image, and practical experience working in the field. Toward the end of the year there is an extended period of three months from February to April where the students will be working primarily on their advanced projects.

Finally, the school year concludes with a month spent learning about the media marketplace, fine tuning editing skills, and establishing industry connections to get the students' work out there.

Professor Leete explained that requirements for the programme include a bachelor's degree, which can be in an unrelated field; prior experience in video production and editing; and a portfolio. Students must be able to operate a camera and must have some facility with computers.

One of the unique aspects of the programme, and of Maharishi University of Management, is the focus on Consciousness-Based Education .

Professor Leete explained, 'The entire programme is structured on our system of Consciousness-Based Education, so all the faculty and students are practising Transcendental Meditation. This creates a fantastic environment for creativity. . . . Just the harmony in the atmosphere that prevails because of the reduction of stress that people experience when they practice TM makes it so easy to collaborate on various ambitious projects.'
