When discussing a new master's degree programme in Media and Communications at Maharishi University of Management, professors Gurdy Leete and Stuart Tanner praised the unique atmosphere and learning environment of the university.
They both agree that the one-year programme, scheduled to begin in autumn 2013, is well designed to foster creativity and encourage students to produce their best work.
Said Professor Tanner, an award-winning film producer, writer, and director who has worked for the BBC, National Geographic, and the Discovery Channel, 'You can come and spend a year really going in depth into the area of filmmaking and also explore other skills in the media area—screenwriting and so on.'
He added that the programme encourages creative exploration.
'It is an incredibly rich creative environment to be in. One of the big comments from students about being here [in Fairfield, Iowa, USA] and working creatively on projects is that because of the block system you get time to really immerse yourself in a creative project, to really spend the time to produce something of great skill, value, and worth.'
In the block system at MUM, he explained, students take only one subject at a time, focusing intently on one class each month.
'This allows full focus and concentration . . . [which] is very beneficial for our area, where our students are engaged in creative projects.'
Another unique feature of Maharishi University of Management is Consciousness-Based Education.
Professor Leete explained: 'The entire programme is structured on our system of Consciousness-Based Education so all the faculty and students are practising Transcendental Meditation (TM), which creates a fantastic environment for creativity and ease of getting things done.'
Professor Tanner brought out another benefit of Consciousness-Based Education at MUM that is often commented on—that because of the low-stress environment created by everyone practising Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes, 'people find it very easy to work with each other.'
This is important, he said, because a lot of creative projects depend on teamwork. 'Ease of being able to form creative relationships is a really important thing, and creative relationships formed here can be very important for future careers.'
