Professors at Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in the USA say that although the local community is small, its global citizens and strong business focus give students a real advantage.
Gurdy Leete, Co-Chair of the Department of Media and Communications, talked about the unique atmosphere at the university and how it affects the Media and Communications programme.
'The entire programme is structured on our system of Consciousness-Based Education, so all the faculty and students are practising [Transcendental Meditation], which creates a fantastic environment for creativity and ease of getting things done.'
Professor Leete, who has written eight books about Adobe Flash and is an award-winning graphic software engineer, explained more about what makes Fairfield, Iowa, such a supportive college town.
'One thing that is wonderful about Fairfield is that it is small enough to feel like a community, but we have more restaurants and more art galleries per capita than my hometown of San Francisco.'
In addition, Professor Leete said, the entire town is wired for fiber optics.
'So we are in this beautiful, peaceful place,' he said, 'but at the same time, we are at the centre of tremendous international activity.'
Professor Stuart Tanner, also of the Media and Communications department, agreed.
He said, 'I know [Fairfield] is in the Midwest and not a very large town, but it really is the global village phenomenon, because we have students from all over the world and we are connected to the entire world. . . .
'We have very strong connections to the media industry and filmmaking,' he added.
Professor Leete said, 'We encourage people to be entrepreneurs. . . . We have quite a few students who set up their own businesses whilst they are students.'
