'Vedic architecture is the only science in the world that has the knowledge of the quality of different directions,' said Dr Eike Hartmann, an international expert in Maharishi Vastu architecture.

Dr Hartmann addressed the Fourth Annual Vastu Panorama Conference in Bhopal, India, via a video presentation. The conference was devoted to the Vedic science of Vastu, or construction aligned with natural law. One of the main goals was to correlate the ancient art of Vastu in a modern scientific context.

On this theme, Dr Hartmann talked about the importance of a building's orientation according to Vedic texts, but also supported this principle with modern scientific findings.

He presented a chart showing auspicious effects gained only when the front of a building faces east or north. Further, he explained that 'rotated buildings facing intermediate directions (northeast, southwest, etc) are always producing inauspicious and disharmonious results.'

Why is it important that Vastu buildings be aligned according to the cardinal directions? The reason has to do with spherical harmonics and the earth's rotation.

Dr Hartmann elaborated, 'Geophysicists and astrophysicists have observed that all planetary bodies vibrate in a certain way. From seismology and helioseismology, it is known that the earth and sun vibrate in terms of spherical harmonics. Spherical harmonics [have] nodal lines running both from east to west and from north to south.'

These nodal lines create a grid across the globe that is oriented to the cardinal directions.

'Buildings should be placed in harmony with this underlying vibrational field, which means they should always be aligned to the cardinal directions,' said Dr Hartmann.

'In addition,' he continued, 'research in neuroscience has shown the nerve cells of the brain, the neurons of the thalamus, fire differently when facing different directions. This means that the power of thought is influenced by directionality.'

He added that for optimum brain functioning and coherence, daily activity as well as the building one lives in should conform to proper orientation.
