In the nearly 40 years since Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment (MSAE) began in one room at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, USA—now Maharishi University of Management (MUM)—the school has grown to become a powerhouse of achievement and the flagship institution for ideal K-12 education throughout the world.

A new film chronicles the development of Maharishi School, and describes the Consciousness-Based Education system at the heart of its academic programme, and students' many outstanding achievements in academics, sports, and the arts.

From the start Maharishi School drew many new students, and eventually in 1989 the school expanded from its limited quarters to a new building that was constructed on the main MUM campus according to Maharishi Vastu architecture.

Inscribed over the main door are the words of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of Maharishi University of Management and Maharishi School, commenting on the generations of students who would be learning in the new building: 'In their intelligence will shine the world's most perfect wisdom.' Teachers, parents, visitors, students, and graduates would all agree that this is exactly what has happened.

Maharishi School provides young students with a comprehensive education not available anywhere else. Its Consciousness-Based Education system represents the 'best of both worlds', parents say, allowing students to develop their inner life as well as their intellect and its expressions.

At the heart of this approach is the twice-daily practice of Transcendental Meditation at school. Dr Richard Beall, MSAE principal, said that through this daily practice, students realize there exists a silent core within their mind; it also helps them to dissolve stress while optimizing their brain function.

Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management, comments in the film that the sense of verticality of the mind he sees in the students is unique to Maharishi School and Conscious-Based Education.

In addition to traditional general education subjects, MSAE students learn organizational and life skills. Middle School students do a lot of project-based learning in which they are given a real-life situation with a meaningful context, and then learn different aspects of the project.

The rapidly expanding Maharishi School boarding programme has been very successful. This programme attracts international students to the school, who are placed with MSAE or MUM host families during their stay. Currently there are 28 boarding students.

Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, the flagship school for Consciousness-Based Education in the world, attracts many distinguished guests. Recently the school hosted Robin Lim, a former Fairfield resident, who in 2011 was awarded the prestigious global honour, CNN Hero of the Year, for her pioneering work making free prenatal care, birthing services, and medical aid available to thousands of poor women at clinics she founded in Bali and Aceh, Indonesia.

Inspired by her visit to Maharishi School, Oprah Winfrey produced a comprehensive video report detailing her new understanding of Consciousness-Based Education. After short interviews with Middle School girls, she said to a group of them, 'You're leading the world, you're changing the world.'

Oprah's Maharishi School video segment is featured in the hourlong episode, 'America's Most Unusual Town', in the 'Oprah's Next Chapter' series. The show was broadcast on her OWN television network last March and inspired an unprecedented wave of interest in Transcendental Meditation across North America.

Last year MSAE students won state championships in several competitions in science, literature, and sports. Students have commented that they finish high school with a love of learning. Ninety-five per cent of graduates are accepted to four-year colleges.

Many have said that the success of Maharishi School represents a clear expression of Maharishi's principle to give knowledge to the children and they will know what to do with it, that enlightenment will blossom.
