Dr David Fisher, chair of the department of Sustainable Living at
Maharishi University of Management, spoke about plans to develop a new master's degree in Sustainable Living to add deeper knowledge and more hands-on experience for students. The degree programme will likely have two tracks, a Master of Arts (MA) and a Master of Science (MS).

Dr Fisher explained how the programme will likely be structured.

Starting in the fall, a cohort of 12-16 students will take the same set of classes—preparatory classes developed for the master's programme. The students will take all the same classes together.

'It will not be like the undergraduate programme where we offer three to four courses every block and students choose which one they want to be in. We feel that the coherence that will be generated between the students and also between the students and the instructors, by having them all together course after course, will be very powerful.'

After the first set of courses, students will have two choices: pursue an MA or an MS in Sustainable Living.

Dr Fisher talked first about the MA programme. Students will spend about a year working with a community that has requested the department's assistance in achieving self-sufficiency and sustainability.

'That will be followed up by six months of writing a publishable paper on their experience,' said Dr Fisher.

He added that the faculty members in the Sustainable Living Department do not expect their students to single-handedly transform a village in just one year.

'But we do think it would be possible to get them well on the road, to provide them the basic tools.'

In this manner, the villagers would have ownership of the project and learn the skills necessary to maintain and build on their self-sufficiency.
