A master's degree programme planned to start within the next few years at Maharishi University of Management (MUM) is in Sustainable Living with a focus on sustainable community development.

Sustainable Living department faculty explained that the current plan is to develop two tracks to the degree: a Master of Science (MS) and a Master of Arts (MA).

According to Dr David Fisher, founder of the department and key developer of the new degree, all students in the master's programme will start in the same manner.

The plan is for a small cohort of students to take the same block of courses together; this will help develop harmony and trust amongst students and between the students and faculty. It will also prepare the students for the second part of their degree track.

While the MA degree will require students to go into a community that has requested assistance and help them become sustainable and self-sufficient, the MS degree will be structured differently, with a more cerebral focus.

After the classes taken together, MS students will spend a year or two conducting a research project on themes related to sustainability and sustainable community development. The culmination of the degree will be a paper published in a scientific journal.

Dr Fisher emphasized that the master's degree is still in the planning stages, so some of the particulars may change. 'This is to give an idea of the types of things that may be covered' in the programme, he said, rather than an exhaustive list.

The general idea, he added, is 'starting with some sort of community empowerment process from within, starting with sustainability and the envisioning process. It's very important that it be a co-created type of thing, not just dropping in [on a community] and telling them what to do. They have to create it from within themselves.'
