An article appearing in El Mercurio, a major newspaper in Chile, several days ago featured a new study* published in the journal Education which found higher graduation rates in students who practised Transcendental Meditation. The students attended an urban school in the USA, and those practising Transcendental Meditation were also less likely to drop out from school, and more likely to be accepted to college.

The article was the top story in the Life, Science, and Technology section of El Mercurio. The article, by Sebastián Urbina, quotes lead author Robert D Colbert, PhD, of the University of Connecticut, USA; and includes additional information from co-author Dr Sanford Nidich, a professor at Maharishi University of Management.

El Mercurio also interviewed Rafael de la Puente, director of the Transcendental Meditation programme in Chile, who described how the technique reduces fatigue and stress and increases orderliness of brain function.

Featured at the top of the full-page article is a photo of a member of the highly-ranked Trinity College (Connecticut) women's squash team practising Transcendental Meditation on the court.

The article in El Mercurio was one of many that have appeared in news media in many countries since the new study was published in the June issue of Education.
