Maharishi Vedic University in Cambodia, established in the early 1990s, has educated thousands of successful graduates in its more than 20-year history. The university is the subject of a new book by its founding rectors, Dr Lee Fergusson and Dr Anna Bonshek.

The curriculum was designed to utilize principles of Consciousness-Based Education, including teaching the Transcendental Meditation technique to students and giving them time in their daily schedule to practise together. Scientific research on Transcendental Meditation in education has found that it reduces stress, promotes integrated brain functioning, increases intelligence, and improves academic performance.

One result of so many students learning Transcendental Meditation (TM) over the years is that there is an organization teaching the technique in Cambodia.

In a recent interview, Dr Fergusson explained that many of the students have found so many positive changes in their lives from their meditation practice, that they took training courses and were qualified as Transcendental Meditation instructors. In the summer holidays in 1993, after the first semester of the new school ended, about 20 became the first teachers of the technique from the student body.

'They have subsequently gone on and taught many thousands of people throughout Cambodia,' said Dr Fergusson, adding they have gone back into the villages and countryside as well, and often use Facebook® and other forms of social media to promote their activities.

In addition to becoming teachers of Transcendental Meditation, many of the students have gone on to find success in business and government.
