The beautiful Nandi Hills area of Kenya is located near the equator at 2,000 metres above sea level, overlooking the famed Rift Valley. In 2009 people in some of the villages in this rural part of Kenya began learning Transcendental Meditation (TM). There are now over 700 people in Nandi Hills practising the simple, natural technique.

The District Chief recently commented that 'Fairfield (in Iowa, USA, the home of Maharishi University of Management) may be known as ''TM Town'','* but he wants Nandi Hills to be 'TM Town 2'. Many children of Nandi Hills have learned Transcendental Meditation, and one school principal has been trained as a Transcendental Meditation teacher. Inspired by the positive changes and academic progress of the children, many adults are also starting to practise; most of the children's mothers have learned the technique.

Kenya has a number of Transcendental Meditation teachers, including three from the Nandi Hills area.

Nandi Hills practitioners of Transcendental Meditation were inspired to build their own hall in which to meditate together. The group includes 200 who also practise the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying. Scientific research in many countries has shown that group practice of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes reduces crime, violence, and other negative trends, while at the same time generating coherence and harmony in society.

The new centre, designed and built in accord with the principles of Maharishi Vastu architecture, houses numerous activities for the practitioners in the area.

A group of students from Nandi Hills attend Maharishi Secondary School for Girls in nearby Mbale, Uganda, where the Consciousness-Based Education programme has been adopted. All students practise Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's peace-creating technologies of consciousness.

A recent delegation of visitors to Nandi Hills, including Dr Bevan Morris, president of Maharishi University of Management, was welcomed by a group of mothers with costumed song and dance.

In other news from Africa, in Namibia there is a small group of practitioners of Transcendental Meditation. Consciousness-Based Education programmes have been integrated into three schools there by a Maharishi Institute graduate.

During a recent visit to Namibia Dr Morris met with the Rotary Club, a group of prominent businessmen, and introduced them to the 'vast opportunity to transform life in their country' through the implementation of Maharishi's technologies of consciousness.
