From its inception part of the mission of Maharishi Vedic University (MVU) in Cambodia was to help students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to strengthen both the society and the economy in their country. Since opening its doors in 1993 MVU has graduated about 4,000 students. Many of those graduates have 'gone on to fulfil important roles in society', recruited by the government, or by local and international businesses, said Dr Lee Fergusson, speaking at a press conference in Phnom Penh. News about Maharishi Vedic University in Cambodia was reported at a recent symposium in the Netherlands.
The press conference was held last December and also featured Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in the USA, who is an international expert on Consciousness-Based Education and all Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's programmes and technologies of consciousness. The press conference heralded the launch in Cambodia of a new book by Dr Fergusson and his wife, Dr Anna Bonshek: Maharishi Vedic University in Cambodia: Educational Reconstruction and Social Renewal.
In 1993, Dr Fergusson and Dr Bonshek were the founding co-rectors of Maharishi Vedic University and with other founding faculty were responsible for introducing Consciousness-Based Education and Transcendental Meditation to Cambodia. At the press conference they presented groundbreaking research that documented significant educational outcomes and social changes in Cambodia resulting from the establishment of MVU. They were also re-united with MVU graduates, several of whom have become leaders of society, and who spoke of their accomplishments.
One MVU graduate has also learned the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme, and has been certified as a teacher of Transcendental Meditation. She works for a leading management training organization, and has her own micro-finance company. She is on the management committee for the Maharishi Foundation for World Peace in Cambodia, and has been actively involved in a number of projects.
Without MVU, this graduate said, she would not have had the opportunity to gain a higher education, and the education she received changed her life dramatically. She expressed her deep appreciation to the teachers who came to Cambodia and introduced Transcendental Meditation, a technique that changes the quality of one's life. Through the Maharishi Foundation for World Peace she and others are teaching Transcendental Meditation throughout Cambodia.
Another MVU graduate reported that in the last two years about 600 people from several organizations have learned Transcendental Meditation, including 100 students in a vocational training centre. About 100 hundred staff and children at a centre for poor homeless children in Phnom Penh have also learned Transcendental Meditation.
In addition, 400 staff and students have learned Transcendental Meditation at a vocational school for disadvantaged girls who have backgrounds of abuse, homelessness, and drug addiction. As well, they are learning practical skills like sewing and hair dressing.
Another teacher of Transcendental Meditation shared stories from her teaching experiences. One girl who learned Transcendental Meditation said afterwards that she began to sleep better, she felt happier, and her study skills improved. Another said that she was less angry, felt more love in her heart, her mind was clearer, and her thinking was faster.
After learning Transcendental Meditation some of the vocational centre girls who had problems controlling their anger and interacting with others are now able to participate in activities in an orderly constructive manner. Girls report that they sleep better, enjoy studying and reading more, think more clearly, and enjoy their vocational training.
The David Lynch Foundation has supported some of these programmes for the last two years.
