Sustainability is about much more than turning off a light or growing organic food. To sustain our world, we must become sustainable human beings by attuning ourselves to all the Laws of Nature, says molecular scientist John Fagan, PhD*, Associate Director of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy in the US. 'Maharishi's Vedic Science has the potential for restoring balance in Nature, and offers a system of operating that allows humans to continue as a sustainable part of the world.'

Please see Part I of this report.

'People are looking to technology to create sustainability, which is an outward focus,' said Dr Fagan. 'We must realize as a species that sustainability can only be achieved through sustainable human beings, by developing the full potential of human consciousness.'

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation Programme and the Global Country of World Peace, explained that the ancient Vedic Literature provides the complete knowledge of Natural Law.

Referring to the Bhagavad-Gita** (9.8), 'Curving back on myself, I create again and again,' Dr Fagan explained, 'Through the self-referral dynamics of consciousness, the field of pure consciousness emerges to be the diverse world we see around us. It is self-organizing and self-perpetuating. The self-referral dynamics of consciousness is the organizing principle for everything in Nature. This is the core lesson for sustainability.'

He continued, 'Administration through Natural Law—another way of speaking of sustainability—is the most natural and balanced thing that can happen. All we need to do is stand out of the way, so Nature can operate for us.'

Dr Fagan gave an example: 'In conventional, chemical-based agriculture, non-renewable resources are converted into pesticides, fuel, and fertilizers. It produces a little food and a huge amount of pollution. Conventional agriculture requires ten calories of petro-energy to produce one food calorie, and is responsible for forty per cent of the world's greenhouse gases.'

However, if we follow Nature's example, using renewable resources to nourish the plants, 'the outcome is food and energy in abundance,' explained Dr Fagan. 'More energy is created than is used to produce the food.'

Observing Natural Law and applying it in our own systems will solve many of today's problems, but this remains a superficial and intellectual approach, according to Dr Fagan. 'It's only when we bring the individual in tune with Natural Law that the individual becomes sustainable. The enlightened individual—whose consciousness is fully developed—spontaneously operates in tune with all the Laws of Nature. A world comprised of such people, even a small proportion, will have a profound effect in moving society as a whole in the direction of sustainability.'

'Nations have come and gone because they've been less than in tune with the Laws of Nature. With Maharishi's Vedic Science, we can make societies sustainable, truly
invincible.'
