Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture utilizes organic methods of farming that are simple and cost-effective, yield healthy abundant crops, and improve the soil every year.

International expert Dr Peter Swan discussed these methods with Maharishi University of Management Dean of Faculty Dr Cathy Gorini on radio station KHOE's programme A Chat with the Dean.

Using non-organic methods, a farmer planting a wheat or barley crop may pass over the field as many as eight times. Alternative organic methods allow the farmer to plant the same crop with just one pass over the field—and cause no soil erosion.

In the autumn, Dr Swan explained, the farmer sows a crop of rye, which gets established and lasts through the winter. In the spring, the rye grows up, and the farmer rolls out the rye on the ground, to make a mulch into which he sows his next crop—such as wheat, beans, or corn, etc.

The mulch conserves moisture in the field, provides food for earthworms and microorganisms in the soil, and deters weeds.

This method allows the farmer to roll and sow his crop in one pass—with a roller on the front of the tractor and a direct seeder on the back of the tractor. Meanwhile other farmers are struggling with rain, erosion, chemicals, fertilizers, fungicides, and weeds.

'All crops have been tested like this with similar methods,' Dr Swan said. This method means 'much less work, much less pollution, and beautiful rich, healthy crops—and improving soil every year'.

This approach is much healthier and less stressful, 'but it requires more alertness and it requires more intelligence on the part of the farmer . . . . He's got to watch the crop carefully, and strike at the right time, and work with Nature.'

Like the programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for every area of society, Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture is agriculture in harmony with Natural Law.
