Togo aims to grow 80,000 T of cotton this year

LOME, June 20 (Reuters) - Togo's main cotton grower's association said on Monday it expects nationwide production to hit 80,000 tonnes during the 2011-12 season, up from 46,800 tonnes in the 2010-11 season that just ended.

The boost in output of raw cotton from the West African state will be due largely to an increase in the amount of land planted, said Essowe Batana, the deputy director of the government-controlled New Cotton Society of Togo.

'Planting began this month, with a surface of 88,000 hectares compared with 61,000 last season,' he said.

Togo beat its 40,000-tonne forecast during the 2010-11 season, but production from the tiny West African state remains at a fraction of the nearly 200,000 tonnes produced annually during the 1990s after a slump in world prices.

Cotton and phosphates are Togo's two largest export earners.
