On 9 April 2012 io9.com reported: An international team of archaeologists have made an intriguing discovery -- the peoples who farmed the Amazon long before the arrival of Europeans did so without burning down trees to clear room for their fields. These indigenous farmers used raised-field farming. 'This ancient, time-tested, fire-free land use could pave the way for the modern implementation of raised-field agriculture in rural areas of Amazonia,' said University of Exeter researcher Dr Jose Iriarte.
