Vedic garden cities combine Vastu architecture with sustainable practices

One goal of a course in Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture is to spread awareness of, and inspire demand for, Vedic garden cities.
Dr Peter Swan, who created the course and has taught it in many countries, described Vedic garden cities as 'cities that are organic, self-sufficient, and sustainable.' They are cities built according to natural law.
A big proportion of the city planning will be devoted to sustainability, so they need not rely on outside sources for food, waste treatment, or water.
Dr Swan elaborated, 'They will store their own rainwater so they don't have to pump from many miles away at great cost and pollution. . . . They will have natural heating and cooling which is nonpolluting. . . . They will all have renewable solar and geothermal energy, nonpolluting vehicles, wastewater treatment on-site, and composting of waste.'
The Vedic garden cities will also grow as much of their own organic food as possible, with the goal to produce enough to feed everyone in the city without relying on food shipped from miles away.
In addition, the cities will be built according to Vedic architecture (Vastu) principles.
'[The houses] will of course all be based on Vastu architecture,' Dr Swan said. 'They will each have a centre of coherence . . . where everybody goes to create that field of coherence in the collective consciousness that maintains the whole society on a level of progressive, evolutionary, no-problems living.'
He also showed an example of a one-acre sustainable Vastu garden, the type that would be part of a Vedic garden city.
The garden, Dr Swan said, could very easily produce enough food to nourish a family of four. It includes compost, roof water collection, fruit trees, medicinal trees, berry bushes, a workshop area, vegetable beds, greenhouses, underground wastewater leach field, and photovoltaic panels.
