Two large groups of people in Nepal have learned the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation technique in the last year.

At one of the leading NGOs (non-governmental organizations, or nonprofit groups) for developing agricultural policy in Nepal, the entire staff has learned Transcendental Meditation (TM). The Centre for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED) was established in 1991, one of the first NGOs of its kind.

The CEAPRED website explains more about the organization's goals:

'Ever since its establishment, CEAPRED has consciously and consistently focused on sustainable poverty reduction and enhancement of food security and livelihoods of the poor, disadvantaged, and deprived families, including small and marginal farmers, of rural Nepal.'

The president of CEAPRED learned Transcendental Meditation years ago and enjoyed it so much that he supported his entire staff of over 30 to learn as well. Now, those who work for the organization have a group meditation morning and evening.

Another large group, also part of a project to promote a better quality of life, has recently learned Transcendental Meditation.

Leslee Goldstein traveled to Nepal to complete her Mothers Project in Kathmandu. Ms Goldstein is a doctoral candidate in Maharishi Vedic Science at Maharishi University of Management. She is doing her PhD dissertation research on 'The Transcendental Meditation Technique and Empowerment from Within in the Lives of Mothers: Research Projects in Nepal and Uganda'. In this project, Ms Goldstein looks at the before and after effects of the Transcendental Meditation technique on different important issues that mothers are faced with.

So far, over 150 mothers have learned Transcendental Meditation as part of the Mothers Project. Ms Goldstein discussed her research in June, at the Third Annual Conference of the Alliance of Women Scientists and Scholars for a Better World, in the Netherlands.

In other news of Transcendental Meditation in Nepal, a new centre for the programme has opened in Kathmandu. The centre will not only be a place to learn the technique, but will also have enough residential rooms for over 100 people to live there, thus establishing a permanent group of meditators whose daily group practice will reduce social stress and create a coherent, peaceful influence in the city and region.
