Over time the nourishing, evolutionary effect of 'agree-culture', as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has described the ideal of agriculture—'agreeing with the culturing intelligence of nature'—is becoming more prevalent and eventually will prevail in farming methods, said Dr Peter Swan, an expert in Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture, in a recent update.

At the present time, however, consumers still need to be extra alert to the purity of the food they are eating. Dr Swan gave several examples of current concerns:

Increasing use of glyphosate
Glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in the world, is the principal chemical in Roundup, marketed by Monsanto. Glyphosate is mainly used in agriculture to kill weeds; its use expanded when Monsanto developed crops that were genetically modified to be glyphosate-resistant ('Roundup Ready').

In the European Union, although genetically modified (GMO) crops are not allowed, glyphosate is used widely to spray whole fields before the harvest in order to ensure they all 'mature' and dry out at the same time. This procedure has become common for potatoes, cereals (wheat, rye, and barley), canola, beans, and peas, as well as for a number of perennial crops—such as raspberries, apples, kiwis, pineapple, etc. Unfortunately a chemical residue is left on the crop which then enters the food chain of both animals and humans.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the agency responsible for establishing and maintaining food safety standards for the European Union, has recently raised the legal limit for glyphosate concentrations in certain foods.

In wheat and wheat products the legal limit has been raised to 100 times what it is for vegetables; and for feed grains has been raised 200-fold. This change increases the possibility that non-organic wheat-based products such as cookies, pastry, cake, bread, and other products may contain high glyphosate concentrations.

Most non-organic milk products—such as milk, butter, cheese, and yoghurt—likewise contain high levels of glyphosate.

Non-organic potatoes and potato products are likely to contain concentrations up to 100 times greater than the legal limit in other vegetables.

Two states in the USA have passed legislation that genetically modified foods have to be labelled. Dr Swan feels this may the beginning of public opinion swinging in the direction of transparency.

In the meantime, he suggested a simple solution: 'Grow your own organic food, in your own Vedic Garden community, to provide yourself and your family with pure food.'

We look to a better time in the future, Dr Swan said, when farmers make use of ancient Vedic technologies revived by Maharishi so that their thought, speech and action will be in accord with natural law. 'Seasons will come on time, crops will be abundant, and everything will be scientific and evolutionary.' This is the complete knowledge of Vedic Organic Agriculture, established in the culturing intelligence of natural law.

Global Good News will continue to feature this recent talk by Dr Peter Swan, giving the perspective of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture on current developments in agriculture.
