Serbia: Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture lecture draws 'standing room only' interest

Dr Peter Swan, an expert in Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture, recently visited Serbia and gave several talks on the subject, drawn from the course he created and has taught around the world.

Dr Swan came at the invitation of Branko Cicic, director of the Transcendental Meditation programme in Serbia. Several years ago Dr Cicic became interested in organic farming, inspired by the knowledge of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture brought to light by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, as a means to improve the quality of food and health of the people in his country.

Setting out to encourage widespread cultivation of organic products in Serbia, over time Dr Cicic established an organic agriculture association (Organska Srbija), set up a stall in the bi-weekly green organic market in Belgrade, and produced a weekly television show on organic farming, called 'Organska Srbija', which is shown throughout the Balkan Peninsula.

During Dr Swan's stay in Serbia, he gave a lecture arranged by Dr Cicic at an agriculture college in Belgrade, introducing the principles of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture to nearly 300 professors, lecturers, and students. The room was packed, to the point of standing room only. Dr Swan intentionally kept the lecture to 45 minutes, but keen interest from the audience led to questions, answers, and discussion for over an hour afterwards.

Dr Swan also spoke to a capacity crowd at the Transcendental Meditation centre in Belgrade, who came to hear his introduction to the Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture course, which was the first lesson. One-third of the people attending did not practise Transcendental Meditation, but had heard about the lecture through Dr Cicic's organic network and were keen to know more.

A vibrant 81-year old woman who attended described one part of her organic goat cheese business. She said she milks her herd of 45 daily using a completely natural method: sitting on her milking stool near the pasture, she calls a goat's name, and that goat comes to her and is milked. She doesn't tie or restrain it in any way. When she finishes with one she calls the next, and so on.

A medical doctor from Macedonia, a well-known cardiologist in her country, attended the course with her daughter and husband, a teacher of Transcendental Meditation. She invited Dr Swan to come to Macedonia, and address growing concerns about the widespread use of glyphosate (Roundup) in conventional agriculture, and its influence on the gut-brain axis.

Dr Cicic reported that one course participant, a university professor of more than 20 years, said he 'got an insight not only into agriculture, but also into creation itself. Now I see everything around me alive. The soul is not just matter any more. It is an organism; and Earth is a being that feeds us all'.

Dr Swan appreciated course participants' intelligence and inquisitive nature, at every step wanting to be sure they had grasped the concepts. At the end of the course each student received a certificate of completion.
