India: Prime Minister Modi releases new stamp honouring Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

On 30 August, His Excellency the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, unveiled a commemorative postal stamp honouring the founder of the Transcendental Meditation programme, His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) of the Government of India had announced earlier that it was ''privileged to bring out the commemorative stamps as the humble homage of the nation to 12 Master Healers of AYUSH systems from the modern era''.

Dignitaries representing the AYUSH Ministry participated in the Prime Minister's presentation of the 12 commemorative stamps at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi:

Maharishi's initiatives throughout the world for over 50 years established Ayurveda as a holistic, scientific system of natural health care, and have been fundamental to the worldwide upsurge of interest in and enthusiasm for Ayurveda seen in the world today.

Commenting in appreciation of the Prime Minister's presentation, Tony Nader, MD, PhD, MARR, said, ''Maharishi dedicated his life to reviving effortless experience of transcending as the basis of 40 areas of Vedic knowledge. His world tours were instrumental in globally popularising Transcendental Meditation—the essence of Yoga—and Ayurveda, two key areas of Vedic knowledge.'' As Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's successor, Dr Nader is head of the international Transcendental Meditation organisations in over 100 countries. He is a Harvard- and MIT-trained medical doctor, neuroscientist, and globally recognized expert in consciousness.

Also among the ''12 Master Healers of AYUSH'' honoured with a commemorative stamp was Rajvaidya Padma Vibhushan* Brihaspati Dev Triguna, who worked closely with Maharishi in his revival of the complete, timeless knowledge and practice of Ayurveda from the Vedic literature.

Guests at the presentation included leaders of Maharishi's programmes in India. Many Transcendental Meditation teachers also attended.

Prime Minister Modi's presentation of the 12 commemorative stamps was the first segment of a live webcast 30 August by the Ministry of AYUSH.

The programme also featured the Prime Minister's Awards for Outstanding Contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga 2018-2019; and the launch of 10 AYUSH Health and Wellness Centres in Haryana—the first in the initiative to create 12,500 such centres under the government's Ayushman Bharat (National Health Protection Mission). In addition to AYUSH Minister Shripad Yesso Naik and Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotech, many other dignitaries representing the AYUSH Sector and hundreds of AYUSH practitioners were present.
