This week, Newsweek reported on the recently published American Journal of Hypertension study demonstrating the positive effects of Transcendental Meditation on treating high blood pressure in African American men and women.
According to the article, approximately 29 per cent of Americans experience hypertension. Previously, those suffering from hypertension were recommended diet changes, medications, and exercise to help lower blood pressure. Now, research from a year-long study shows that Transcendental Meditation is more effective than conventional health methods in lowering blood pressure.
As explained in the article in the Science and Your Health section, 150 African-American men and women with hypertension were tested in a study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. In the study, one group was treated with muscle-relaxation therapy and the other was instructed in Transcendental Meditation.
The group that practised Transcendental Meditation 'lowered their diastolic pressure by 6mm and systolic pressure by 3mm.' The patients who practised muscle relaxation only lowered their diastolic pressure to 3mm and experienced no decrease in systolic pressure.
According to Newsweek, the group practising Transcendental Meditation also decreased their use of hypertension medication by 23 per cent.
