Express Newsline, a news site from Mohali, India, recently published a list of different techniques for relaxation, including such approaches as the Transcendental Meditation Programme, Yoga, massage and exercise. The article, which appreared in the Health Section, addressed the damaging effects of stress, noting that stress is a causative factor in many serious diseases.

The article explained that the Transcendental Meditation Technique was 'introduced in the United States in the early 60's by its founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi'. It described the technique of using a mantra, 'selected not for its meaning but strictly for its sound', to allow the mind to effortlessly and naturally go to subtler levels of the thinking process. The result, said the article, was that the mind transcends thoughts and reaches the silent level of pure being, the field of all possibilities.

A large body of research on the TM Technique was cited 'including studies out of Yale, Harvard and Stanford universities' which show the tangible benefits of the programme.
