On 11 May 2005 South Bend Tribune reported: An article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on the latest published research on the Trancendental Meditation Programme continues to be picked up by newspapers across the region. The South Bend Tribune is the latest to run the artilce which begins, 'One of the first long-term studies of Transcendental Meditation has found that the practice was associated with significantly lower rates of death.' It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring fulfilment to the field of health.

In the study, 202 seniors with elevated blood pressure were divided into two groups: those that learned the Transcendental Meditation Technique (TM), and those that learned other relaxation approaches or who took part in a health education class.

The participants were followed for an average of 7.6 years, and some as long as 18.8 years. The TM group had a 23 per cent decrease in deaths from all causes and a 30 per cent reduction in cardiovascular disease deaths.

The article quoted Dr Richard Schneider, lead researcher on the study and director of the Center of Natural Medicine and Prevention at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa. He said that the reductions in death rate that the TM group saw were similar to those found in people who take cholesterol-lowering drugs or blood pressure drugs.

'But they (the drugs) often have adverse side effects,' he was quoted as saying. 'This utilizes the body's own pharmacy without those side effects.'

Schneider also told reporter John Fauber that there are several ways in which the Transcendental Meditation Programme could work to reduce mortality, 'including making it easier to quit smoking, strengthening the immune system, improving nervous system activity, and reducing stress hormones'.

'I personally think it's related to a wide variety of changes,' he was quoted as saying.

Schneider also said that the Medical College was currently conducting two similar TM studies with Maharishi University of Management. One study involves 250 African-Americans with high blood pressure and the other 250 African-Americans with coronary artery disease. Hypertension is a leading cause of death among African-Americans.

Every day Global Good News documents the rise of a better quality of life dawning in the world and highlights the need for introducing Natural Law based—Total Knowledge based—programmes to bring the support of Nature to every individual, raise the quality of life of every society, and create a lasting state of world peace.
