India: Action group on Ayurveda proposed

In a seminar in New Delhi, he also praised Maharishi Ayurveda for playing a pioneering role in this direction. Subodh Kant Sahay, who is from the tribal area of the country which is known for herbal medicine, said that the country has a vast reservoir of herbs, but lacks the means to market them. He said that there is a need for some kind of forum or an action group to help Ayurveda get its deserved place in India and the world.

He said that this would not only go a long way toward tackling the health problems of the country, but also structure access for Indian Ayurveda companies to international markets. He said that there should be focus on the tribal areas of the country where people primarily rely on these herbal formulations for their health problems.

The Chairman of Maharishi Ayurveda, Mr Anand Srivastava, who presided over the seminar, also supported the idea of the action group. Srivastava spoke on the theme of 'Universal Appeal of Ayurveda' and he said in order to compete in the international markets the Indian Ayurveda companies need to prove their products on all scientific parameters, so that propaganda in the western media against herbal formulations could be effectively countered.

Mr Srivastava said that the goal could be achieved by working on two levels. First, by creating understanding of Ayurveda the world over, and secondly by conforming to international standards. He claimed that no Ayurvedic medicine so far has been withdrawn from the market due to side effects, while every year many allopathic medicines have to be withdrawn from the markets due to harmful side effects—but by that time the manufacturer has already garnered enough profit.

He lamented that Ayurveda in the country is being treated as an alternative therapy. This shows the lack of proper focus on this ancient knowledge at the policy level. He urged the government to participate in the proposed action group. 'Maharishi Ayurveda is ready to take a lead in this initiative,' he said.

He said that Maharishi Ayurveda is selling its products in as many as 72 countries. These medicines have been scientifically validated by many research studies in prominent institutions around the world. At present six more research studies are being conducted on its medicines in All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
