At an international conference in Meru, Holland, chief architect of Maharishi Ayurveda Products, Anand Srivastava, spoke about the evolution of these products from a time when the knowledge of Ayurveda was lost and scattered to the creation of highest quality healthcare products--carefully prepared to preserve the authenticity and purity of this ancient wisdom.

This past week, many thousands of citizens of the Global Country of World Peace, peace-loving citizens and practitioners of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Technique from every nation, gathered at the international capital of the Global Country of World Peace in Meru, Holland, or connected via satellite and Internet broadcast, to participate in an historic global celebration and conference to usher in Satya Yuga, a new time of peace and happiness for the world.

Anand Srivastava spoke on the fourth day of the Guru Purnima celebrations and conference. He began by offering his achievements to Maharishi and Guru Dev and giving expression to his infinite gratitude. He said that Guru Purnima, is the day of the Guru, but for a disciple, every day is Guru Purnima.

Anand Srivastava defined the meaning of the word Ayurveda: Ayur means life and Veda means pure knowledge. He said that before Maharishi Ayurveda, the pure knowledge aspect of Ayurveda had been lost. What existed was life without Veda, which, he said, is absolutely lifeless.

At the time when Maharishi began to put attention on Ayurveda, there had previously been no discussion of medicines, no standardization, and no thought of research. Maharishi started enlivening Ayurveda, and summarized the goal in the expression: Creating a Disease-Free Society.

Anand Srivastava described how the situation in the world was at the time Maharsishi started enlivening Ayurveda: Almost everyone had some kind of disease and there was no cure even for the common cold, so the task of creating a disease-free society seemed like a mission impossible.

Then Maharishi-ji brought the Veda back into Ayurveda and provided a holistic vision, so that the task looked very simple and enjoyable. Anand Srivastava said that the work is so fulfilling that with every step he takes, he gains the energy to take many more steps forward.

Anand Srivastava gave an account of the beginning steps and the various obstacles they faced in creating products of the very purest and highest quality. His talk is paraphrased as follows. He said, 'I remember in the early days when some Vaidyas (Ayurvedic experts) and I were making an herbal formula that required ten ingredients and we only had eight, so we thought we would have to wait and get the other two the next day. However, when I came the next day, the herbal preparation was already finished. The Vaidyas said they had made it without the other two ingredients and told me, 'Don't worry, nothing will happen, it will be all right.' I was still at a junior level at that point with those great Vaidyas and so I agreed.

'Then later I thought it over and I realized they were right: nothing will happen. After all nothing has happened for centuries—and it is just because of this attitude. So the next day, I went back with folded hands and requested them to do it again properly, because I wanted something good to happen, something big to happen. Our goal was to bring good health to the whole world. If the Shastras (the Vedic Literature) prescribe ten ingredients, then we will use ten. The otherVaidyas agreed.'

Another great task was to implement a method of standardization for the potency of the ingredients. Anand Srivastava realized that the great Vaidyas would not be able to examine every ingredient once these formulas were produced on a large scale. So they had to develop a system whereby everyone could recognize which herbs were suitable for use.

They worked with many scientists and developed a sophisticated laboratory that would recognize which plants contained all the proper botanical markers. The system ensures that every ingredient has the required strength, quality, freshness etc., to provide the intended result in the final product.

They also developed a testing centre, considered one of the best in its class, for discovering the presence of contaminants such as lead, mercury, cadmium etc., that could be contained in the forest plants. This testing ensures that Maharishi Ayurveda products never contain these kinds of pollutants.

Another concern was microbial contamination. Five years ago, the factory had to be closed for three days when it was fumigated. Now, however, the scientists and Vaidyas together have formulated a non-chemical fumigation formula that is not harmful to humans.

Over the years, Anand Srivastava has been very careful not to take any short cuts that could affect the quality of Maharishi Ayurveda products. For example, at one point he was offered a substitute formula that was 150 times less expensive than the prescribed ingredient, yet because it is the intelligence within each plant that produces the desired effect, he could not think of compromising the quality of the product by accepting it.

At another time, a senior Vaidya from another very large Ayurvedic producer wanted to join them and said that he could make a certain formula in just two days that traditionally takes 30-50 days. Rather than fermenting the herbs in the formula over many weeks as the Vedic texts prescribe, this Vaidya simply added alcohol. The result seemed to him to be the same.

Anand Srivastava explained that to him the difference seemed like the difference between a man who is not educated, but who works hard and is able to support his family, and a man who is fully educated and enlightened. The second man may not have been earning from day one; however, he is able to support not only his own family, but also the entire society.

Maharishi Ayurveda Products are meant to take care of the entire system on every level, and so no short cuts are acceptable. Some formulas take as long as four and a half years to make properly. The only difference between production now and production 5,000 years ago, is in terms of quantity. Whereas in the distant past, one batch may have consisted of 50 kilos, today batches of 500 or 2,000 kilos are prepared at once. The purity and sanctity of this ancient wisdom is always maintained in selecting and preparing the herbs.

Anand Srivastava's talk was one of many inspiring talks given at the conference that took place in the grandeur of the International Capital of the Global Country of World Peace, set amidst magnificent formal gardens, fountains, and acres of woodland. Its elegant, spacious central building, constructed of all-natural materials, was designed entirely according to the principles of Vedic Architecture.

Inside, the conference halls were exquisitely decorated with golden thrones for the Rajas, large arrangements of fresh flowers and stately greenery, graceful silk draperies, and luxurious red carpeting. They were filled to capacity with thousands of dedicated leaders and supporters of the Global Country of World Peace.

Presiding over the conference was His Majesty Maharaja Nader Raam, first ruler of the Global Country of World Peace, and 22 of his Rajas, each responsible for bringing the life-supporting programmes of the Global Country of World Peace to the 10-12 countries in his care, as well as many illustrious ministers and leaders of the Global Country of World Peace.

Most importantly, the conference was blessed by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, world's foremost scientist and Vedic scholar who introduced Transcendental Meditation and knowledge of Total Natural Law to the world for perfection in individual and national life.
