Faculty members Robert Schneider, M.D., and Nancy Lonsdorf, M.D., were recently appointed ministers of health for the U.S. Peace Government.

As well as promoting widespread use of Maharishi Consciousness-Based Health Care(SM) programs, Dr. Schneider and Dr. Lonsdorf will be seeking federal reimbursement through Medicare and Medicaid, as well as private health insurers, of the costs of programs such as the Transcendental Meditation® technique. 'We are going to work on the government level to change reimbursement policies,' Dr. Schneider said.

In his new role, Dr. Schneider is also currently working with the David Lynch Foundation and the Abramson Family Foundation, which are focusing on introducing large numbers of college students to the Transcendental Meditation program and eventually to group practice of Maharishi's peace-creating technologies. Dr. Schneider will lead the scientific evaluation of the effects of these programs on student health.

Dr. Schneider will be the National Minister of Health of the U.S. Peace Government but will remain based at the University's Maharishi Vedic City campus as director and professor at the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention. Dr. Lonsdorf, appointed National Minister of Women's Health, is based in Maharishi Vedic City.

The U.S. Peace Government was established in 2003 as part of the Global Country of World Peace to be a complementary government to bring prevention-oriented, problem-free administration to America. Its mission is to prevent social violence, terrorism, and war, and to promote peace and harmony.

According to Dr. Schneider, the goal is to create ideal health and a disease-free society in the U.S. 'That's the pathway to peace—through health. We want to change the U.S. from a disease-care system to a healthcare system and move it to a prevention-oriented approach, which is the specialty of Maharishi Consciousness-Based Health Care.'

According to John Hagelin, director of the University's Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy and president of the U.S. Peace Government, Dr. Lonsdorf is the most experienced and most widely published national expert on Maharishi Consciousness-Based Health Care as it pertains to women's health. 'Dr. Lonsdorf is a popular and effective speaker, and a very dynamic proponent of all of Maharishi's health programs,' Dr. Hagelin said.

Dr. Schneider believes the policy changes he and Dr. Lonsdorf will be working on will be supported by the extensive published scientific research that's been done around the world.

'We are taking this next step, bringing out scientific findings published in professional journals, to change policy on the basis of science.'

Dr. Schneider said his new responsibility is a great honor and is an extension of the research and work done at the University.

'This is a real expansion of our work here to a national level, and it's very gratifying to apply what we've been learning here in an academic setting to the larger society,' he said. 'I feel personally expanded with this role, and I'm honored to help.'
