The nation's top cardiologists recently had the opportunity to learn about the benefits of the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health (SM) when for the first time the American College of Cardiologists (ACC) offered a symposium on natural medicine—and chose to highlight it in the national and international publicity for the event.

Faculty member Robert Schneider, M.D., co-chaired the symposium with Brian Olshansky, professor of cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Iowa's Carver College of Medicine. This symposium on integrative cardiology was part of the ACC's Annual Scientific Session.

'The ACC is the primary body for cardiology in the U.S., and this was the first time this national body had a symposium on natural and complementary medicine,' Dr. Schneider said. 'And to have that session focus primarily on the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health was significant.'

Of the five presentations on natural medicine, four were on research carried out at Maharishi University of Management or at collaborating institutions. According to Dr. Olshansky the audience showed much enthusiasm. 'We had questions that were positive, and it showed an interest in meditation amongst people for whom this would not necessarily be the case. The fact that we had as many people as we did really testifies to the interest.'

Over 200 cardiologists attended the symposium, and the 30,000 cardiologists at the meeting were in some way exposed to the content of this presentation.

In addition, an audiotaped summary will be offered by the ACC to many thousands of cardiologists as part of their continuing medical education program.

Dr. Schneider also recently participated in the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine's review of grant applications in Washington, D.C.

'It's a sign that we're considered nationally ranked experts in the field of natural medicine,' Dr. Schneider said. 'We're called on to judge a very competitive field of national grant applications for research.'
