On 9 August 2006 USA Today reported: Researchers at the University of California, Irvine say that Transcendental Meditation (TM) may reduce the brain's reaction to pain. The study's fascinating results showed that both long and short term meditators received this benefit. It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring fulfilment to the field of health.

The article published in USA Today stated that in a study funded by the National Institutes for Health, the scientists 'used neuroimaging to monitor the brains of 12 healthy people who'd been practising Transcendental Meditation for 30 years.'

'These individuals had a 40% to 50% lower brain response to pain than 12 people in a control group who did not practise Transcendental Meditation,' according to the article.

The study's fascinating results showed that both long and short term meditators received this benefit. Members of the control group who later learned TM were found to have a reduction in cerebral response to pain when they were tested for pain response 5 months after beginning the Transcendental Meditation practice.

The current edition of the medical journal NeuroReport features these findings, which can be summarized by saying that TM 'may produce a physiological state that's capable of modifying various kinds of pain' possibly due to a fundemental change in total brain functioning. Past research has indicated an improved, more positive outlook on life and better ability to handle stress in TM practioners.
