Speaking in this week's global News Conference on 28 February, Dr Robert Schneider, a leading preventive cardiologist, presented detailed results of the latest study on Transcendental Meditation and congestive heart failure.

Dr Robert Schneider explained that all the 63 men and women in this study had impairment of heart functioning—that is, they couldn't walk very far; and that the effectiveness of the heart is measured by the six-minute walk test to see how far people can go.

'These people were Class 2 or Class 3,' said Dr Schneider, 'which means that walking to the store or carrying groceries would be quite difficult for them—they get out of breath very easily.'

The first chart Dr Schneider showed presented the change in this walk test ability in practitioners of Transcendental Meditation (TM) before learning the technique and after six months, compared to the controls receiving conventional education in healthy life style—health education, diet, and exercise—who showed virtually no change.

There was about a 20 per cent change in the TM practitioners' physical capacity, Dr Schneider said, 'related to the pumping action of their heart over this time period, which is similar to the effects of many drugs on the failing heart, but without the hazardous side-effects.'

The second slide Dr Schneider presented showed improvements in mental functioning. Not just the physical heart was improved, but also the individual's reported quality of life on standardized measurement. The heart failure quality of life test shows how a person's life—their social life, their personal life—is impaired by the disease, so the reduction in impairment in the TM practitioners compared to a worsening in the health education controls is also very significant, said Dr Schneider.

Dr John Hagelin, hosting the global News Conference, pointed out that the p factor in this test, p=.0036, less than a few parts per thousand, indicates this particular result could not have been a statistical fluke nor due to chance.
