In the global News Conference on 28 February, Dr Robert Schneider, a leading preventive cardiologist, explained the lowering of risk factors for heart disease through the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

Risk factors, such as high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries, Dr Schneider said, can worsen the disease in someone who has it. Through the practice of Transcendental Meditation, these stress-related phenomena are reduced, and then the risk factors for the cause and progression of heart disease are reduced.

The research results show improved pumping activity of the heart, Dr Schneider said. 'That's part of the story, but we believe, based on these several hundred publish research studies, that this is an integrated response seen throughout the nervous system, throughout the brain-heart system, throughout the whole system.

'So it's a holistic effect which has these consequences, and I'd like to acknowledge the work of our co-authors at the University of Pennsylvania and at Maharishi University of Management in helping to bring out this multitude of effects, as well as the support of the National Institutes of Health.
