Dr Robert Schneider answers a question from the Press about whether Transcendental Meditation is doing something more than just reducing risk factors in the prevention of heart failure.

Dr Schneider said that he thought Transcendental Meditation does both. Changes we have seen in other research help to explain the finding that just came out, said Dr Schneider, but also there's some new mechanism of action that we have just discovered now.

'Heart failure is the end stage of a disease, and there are many steps before that. It often appears in a person's sixties or seventies, but what we do in childhood actually contributes to heart failure later in life.'

So when we've looked at the earlier stages of disease, said Dr Schneider, we saw changes in blood pressure, psychological stress, and thickening of the coronary arteries. There's also a new finding that came out just a few months ago showing less enlargement of the heart, Dr Schneider said.

When the heart is enlarged, the muscles are weak, the heart is out of shape, said Dr Schneider. It's not its taut, contract self, and enlargement of the heart is a precursor to a failing heart.

In one study we showed decreased enlargement of the heart in TM practitioners—enlargement being just a few steps before the failing heart. 'So this finding of heart function in people with heart failure is the logical next step, it's a new piece of the puzzle,' said Dr Schneider.

'There's only one more stage after that,' said Dr Schneider, 'and we've looked at it already. The next stage after heart failure is cardiac mortality', which is now the leading cause of death in the world as a whole—not only in United States, but even in developing nations like India and China.

A paper on cardiac mortality published in the American Journal of Cardiology about one year ago, Dr Schneider continued, showed a 23% lower death rate in TM practitioners over eight years; and a 30% lower death rate from heart diseases over eight years.

So this 'completes the story now', Dr. Schneider said. 'We have shown at all stages of risk and the disease as well as mortality that this one technology is effective at all those stages.'
