New course to offer knowledge of how Vedic gardens are nourished by the stars

Gardening is one of life's great pleasures. Home gardens are a source of beauty and nourishment for millions of people worldwide. The nutritional value of eating colourful fruits and vegetables is well known, and evidence reveals that gardening has surprising mental and physical health benefits. For example, exposure to soil bacteria stimulates the immune system, and gardening activities increase serotonin in the brain.

What could be even healthier and more holistic than organic gardening? The Vedic approach to gardening provides insight into the relationship between the cosmic values of Natural Law and Nature's expressions in plant life, to promote ideal health for the gardener and for all who enjoy the products of the garden. Vedic gardening is based on Maharishi's Vedic Science—the most ancient knowledge of Nature's functioning, revived in its completeness by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation Programme and the Global Country of World Peace.

A new course on Vedic gardening, and a Vedic Garden calendar, are being developed by the Foundation for Total Knowledge Based Health of the Global Mother Divine Organization*. These new initiatives were announced 9 February 2009 during the organization's monthly Full Moon celebration, broadcast live on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3.**

During the broadcast, one of the Raj Rajeshwaris—Mothers of the World from the Sovereign Domain of Consciousness—explained that Vedic gardening takes into account the influence of the planets and stars to gain maximum advantage of the nourishing power of Nature's intelligence.

Throughout its monthly orbit, the moon passes through the twelve signs of the solar zodiac. Each constellation has the predominance of one of the elements—earth, water, fire, and air. As the moon progresses, the primary elements of the constellations influence the moon, and stimulate specific aspects of plant life.

For example, the growth of leaves is enhanced when the moon is passing through Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio, as the water element is dominant in these constellations. Likewise, constellations predominant with the fire element enhance the growth of fruit; roots thrive under the influence of the earth element; and air supports the development of flowers.

Vedic gardens are arranged according to the planets and the geographic directions. The entire blueprint of creation, in the form of Veda and the Vedic Literature, is upheld according to the four cardinal directions: with respect to the four principal aspects of the Vedic Literature, Atharva Veda is associated with north; Yajur Veda with south; Sama Veda with west; and Rk Veda with east.

Sowing and harvesting according to the Vedic principles of gardening produce healthier plants, more productive crops, and more nourishing food in both simple home gardens as well as large scale farms.
