Practising Transcendental Meditation could help millions with anxiety disorders, expert says

27 April 2009
Dr Norman Rosenthal*, an eminent senior researcher in psychiatry and psychobiology for 20 years at the National Institute of Mental Health in the US, recently discussed the potential of the Transcendental Meditation Programme to help millions of people suffering from anxiety disorders, depression, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Although symptoms may vary among the 40 million people in the US with anxiety disorders, 19 million with depression, nearly 6 million with bipolar disorder—'they share one thing in common: they all have an overactive stress-response system. Their fight and flight responses are on overdrive,' explained Dr Rosenthal, clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University.
Research shows that 'TM [Transcendental Meditation] can soothe the over-active fight and flight responses. So it would seem like an obvious thing to try in people who are stressed . . . ,' he said.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a significant problem among veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, Dr Rosenthal continued. Because Transcendental Meditation helps treat 'overactive stress-response patterns . . . you would think that this would be a very logical treatment for this particular condition,' he said.
Dr Rosenthal cited research on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Transcendental Meditation. A pilot study from the 1980's found that after three months of practising Transcendental Meditation, seven out of ten Vietnam veterans needed no further treatment. 'TM proved itself to be superior to the psychotherapy of the day.'
Dr Rosenthal strongly encouraged further studies on this 'very important area of research'.
Speaking at a major press conference** held earlier this month in New York City, USA, Dr Rosenthal said, 'I would like to take advantage of this opportunity—and in fact this amazing event, when so many people are paying attention to a technique that has already proven itself to be so very valuable—to extend this untapped potential of the technique for those millions of people who are suffering from the pain and the heartache from emotional disorder.'
'Tens of millions might stand to benefit from TM,' Dr Rosenthal said.
*Dr Rosenthal has authored over 200 scholarly articles and books and has made major contributions to the field of mental health.
**Doctors, celebrities, and educators spoke at a 3 April press conference preceding the historic Paul McCartney benefit concert on 4 April at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, USA. The extraordinary achievements and goals of the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace were presented at the press conference.
The 'Change Begins Within' benefit concert contributed funds to teach one million at-risk children Transcendental Meditation—giving them life-long tools to overcome stress and violence, and promote peace and success in their lives.
The concert was headlined by Paul McCartney, with special guests including Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Moby, Paul Horn, Bettye LaVette, Donovan, and Jim James.
