The news media have recently reported recommendations by well-known health experts on using Transcendental Meditation to reduce blood pressure. During a keynote address, a prominent physician recommended the practice for African American men; a writer on natural medicine cited scientific research on Transcendental Meditation in a discussion of natural means to reduce blood pressure.

Sandra Jordan of The St. Louis American (Missouri, USA) reported recent comments about Transcendental Meditation and high blood pressure by Beverly Coleman-Miller, M.D, president of the BCM Group in Washington, DC.

Dr Coleman-Miller's comments came during her keynote address honouring award recipients at the recent '9th Annual Salute to Excellence in Health Care Awards' in St Louis, in which she made recommendations for resources to address pressing public health care issues.

'When speaking about other chronic conditions that beset the African-American community,' Ms Jordan wrote, 'such as hypertension and asthma, Coleman-Miller suggested adding transcendental meditation to help bring down the blood pressure of African-American men.'

Ms Jordan continued, quoting Dr Coleman-Miller: '''Transcendental meditation—no other—can drop it down by hundreds,'' [Coleman-Miller] said, though she urged patients to keep taking their current blood pressure medications. ''Add that to the mix, and see what it can do,'' she said of TM.'

Jennifer Graham at www.naturalmedicine.com, discussing the serious American health problem of high blood pressure, and exploring natural means to reduce it, reported that 'Transcendental meditation can help relax your mind and body. Research suggests that it can also help keep your blood pressure under control. . . .'

She also stated, 'Researchers believe that Transcendental Meditation synchronizes the mind and body, causing chemical changes that allow the body to heal itself. A study published in the journal Hypertension in 1995 did a comparison between muscle relaxation and transcendental meditation, to see which was more effective in reducing stress in patients with high blood pressure. The group who meditated had a much greater reduction in their blood pressure levels.'
