17 November 2009
On 17 November 2009 Correio Braziliense reported:
The Transcendental Meditation Programme not only reduces stress, but recent research shows that it lowered risk of heart attack, stroke, and death by nearly 50 per cent in patients with coronary heart disease. A local couple in Brazil also shares the benefits they've experienced in their lives.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of health.
Results of the nine-year scientific research study* were presented this month at a meeting of the American Heart Association, in Orlando, Florida, USA.
The 201 participants—average age 59—were divided into two groups: one group learned the Transcendental Meditation Technique and the other took educational classes on diet, exercise, and risk factors. The group practising Transcendental Meditation had significantly reduced cardiovascular problems.
Transcendental Meditation Teacher Teresa Castilho has been practising the technique since she was 13, and has been a Teacher for over 20 years. Ms Castilho explains that studies have shown Transcendental Meditation can produce measurable physiological changes such as increased coherence of brainwave activity and lower heart rate.
'According to the instructor, practitioners seek meditation for various reasons, but in most cases, they are looking for a tool against the physical and mental fatigue,' the article reports. 'We know that the origin of many diseases is stress,' Ms Castilho was quoted as saying.
Police officer Claudio Miranda de Andrade, 37, says that he was under tremendous stress and had to take prescription drugs to combat his depression and anxiety. 'Meditation has brought me balance,' the article quoted him as saying. 'The environment can be stressful but you remain centered . . . .' Biologist Angela Rossi Marcos de Andrade, 33, comments in the article that because of meditation she is 'much less anxious, less tense'.
