Worldwide media coverage of a new study presented at the American Heart Association annual meeting—showing a 47% reduction in heart attacks, strokes, and mortality through the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Programme—was on a par with coverage of other major medical discoveries.

Lead author Robert Schneider, MD, FACC,* explained that because of the design strength of this nine-year study, it introduces a whole new category of medical technology which utilizes the inner healing intelligence of the body.

Just as a new drug producing these effects would be considered a major discovery and merit high levels of publicity, Transcendental Meditation is like a new category of medical therapy, Dr Schneider continued.

'[Transcendental Meditation] is as effective as other therapies, but as yet undiscovered by modern medicine, and now has been discovered,' he said.

Reports of the study circled the globe, appearing in top publications including the New York Times and BBC News.

'This went around the world. It went to Africa, went to the Middle East, where it was extensively covered from the BBC—and then in North America, Europe, Asia it was widely covered,' said Dr Schneider.

'BBC came out with a major story,' he added. 'It was the most read story for several days on the website.'

In a very unusual step, the New York Times published not just one, but two articles discussing the study from different angles, Dr Schneider reported.

In coming days, Global Good News will present the continuation of Dr Schneider's talk, in which he discusses in more detail how Transcendental Meditation improves health.

*Robert Schneider, MD, is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Director of the Institute of Natural Medicine and Prevention at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, and Dean of the Maharishi College of Perfect Health, Director of Health in the national administration of Dr John Hagelin, and Deputy Minister of Health for the Global Country of World Peace. He authored the book Total Heart Health—How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease with the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health.

** Dr Schneider's report was featured on the 10 December 2009 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
