The ancient Vedic Literature of India describes the benefits of essential oils, how to utilize them, and how to combine them to achieve diverse effects for health and beauty.

Continuing her discussion of VedAroma essential oils in context of the history and traditions of numerous cultures and countries, Dr Rosie Geelvink, Head of the Department of Aromatherapy at Maharishi College of Perfect Health in MERU, Holland, presented the profound knowledge of aroma therapy contained in the texts of the Vedic Literature.

Please see Part I of this article.

The Vedic Literature describes utilization of essential oils 'for the promotion of good health and removal of diseases', she said.

Charak Samhita states that they are 'beneficial for life and increasing strength and stability of the body', Dr Geelvink said.

They give nourishment and pleasantness to the mind, improve beauty, prevent inauspiciousness, and promote longevity, according to Charak Samhita.

There are also detailed instructions for massage with aromatic oils, said Dr Geelvink, adding that in both Charak Samhita and Bhava Prakash Samhita, many recipes are given. These texts mention flower pastes of rose, jasmine, hibiscus, lotus flower, saffron, sandalwood, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, pine, and many other aromatic substances—'to increase the physical health and strength of the body and give nourishment and pleasantness to the mind'.

In Kashyap Samhita a whole chapter is devoted to the treatment of diseases with herbal fumigations, which is a kind of release of the essential oil of the plant, Dr Geelvink said.

Now through VedAromas, this ancient wisdom has been revived in its completeness as an aspect of Maharishi Vedic Medicine. It is one of the most natural systems of promoting holistic psychological and physical health and well-being.

'So it has a great tradition. It is a very profound gift that we are able to revive this great ancient tradition in our time, when we are exposed to so much stress and strain,' Dr Geelvink said.

'We are very happy that we are able to offer this product to the world, and we hope to be very successful with it,' she concluded.
