Maharishi Ayur-Veda and women's health: US university offers new one-year nurses' certificate training programme online

The School of Nursing and Health Professions at Brandman University in the United States is offering a new one-year certificate programme for nurses: Maharishi Ayur-Vedic Medicine Mother-Baby Health Care. Beginning in late August, the programme is being offered online as one of the university's many academic programmes providing professional training for working adults.

As described in the catalogue of Brandman University, an accredited institution based in California, the certificate programme includes learning the Transcendental Meditation Programme as a prerequisite for other courses including: Good Health through Prevention; Self-Pulse Analysis For Good Health; Diet, Digestion, and Nutrition; and Maharishi Vedic Mother-Baby Health Care. The Transcendental Meditation course may also be taken for nurses' Continuing Education Units.

Along with detailed course descriptions, the university catalogue describes Maharishi Ayur-Veda as 'the world's most ancient and complete science of natural medicine', which 'provides a wealth of knowledge and time tested therapies to promote health in both mind and body'. It also gives a historical perspective on Ayurveda, ' ''the science of life'' which comes from the ancient Vedic tradition of India, where it has been practiced for more than 5,000 years', and the re-enlivenment by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi of 'this age-old knowledge in its completeness and original purity'.

The curriculum of the new certificate programme was developed over the last two years as a central element in an initiative of the Global Mother Divine Organization,* to create a college of Maharishi Vedic Medicine for women's health. Under the leadership of Margaret Mullins, M.S.N., C.F.N.P., an expert in the application of Maharishi Ayur-Veda for women's health,** a group began working in MERU, Holland in 2008, including a number of senior lady Vaidyas (Ayurvedic physicians) who were retired heads of Ayurvedic universities and schools in India as well as experts in women's health.

Margaret Mullins has been working clinically with Maharishi Ayur-Veda since 1985, and helped develop the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Mother Baby Programme. Others instrumental in the initiative include Veronica Butler, MD, co-author with Nancy Lonsdorf, MD, of A Woman's Best Medicine, a renowned work on Maharishi Ayur-Veda and women's health; and other highly experienced nurse practitioners in this field.

Delegates from around the world learned about the new programme during the Global Mother Divine Organization's recent Third International Congress in MERU, Holland.***

They heard the certificate programme and its curriculum described as providing 'a very thorough and comprehensive understanding' of the basic principles and practice of Maharishi Ayur-Veda health care. Several components are drawn from existing 16-hour courses in Maharishi Ayur-Veda, explained the Raj Rajeshwari* of the United States, who presented the programme to the Congress via video. A new 16-hour course was created to give indepth knowledge of the Mother Baby Programme—fulfilling one of the primary purposes of the initiative, to re-enliven this valuable programme, she said.

She also commented on the timeliness of re-enlivening the Mother Baby Programme, which was offered years ago but had been dormant for some time in many countries, including the US. 'There are so many issues with infants now,' including rising rates of illness and learning disabilities, for which stress and toxins in the environment are commonly understood to be strong contributing factors, she said. The new programme offers knowledge and practical approaches of Maharishi Ayur-Veda that address and can prevent these problems. 'If we can offer parents the knowledge of how to raise their children in the most healthy ways, it will be such a gift for this world, in eliminating unnecessary suffering.'
