Research shows reduction of high blood pressure through Transcendental Meditation

The recently published Scientific Research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme: Collected Papers, Volume 6 includes research showing reduction of high blood pressure through the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique.

The study, conducted by Robert Schneider, MD, FACC, was published in the journal Hypertension in 1995, and received grant support from the US government, reported Dr Michael Dillbeck, an expert on Transcendental Meditation research, who is one of the editors of Collected Papers Volume 5, and the editor of Volume 6.

In addition to study participants who learned the Transcendental Meditation Programme, there were two control groups. One group took a health education class and learned about healthy diet, lifestyle, and exercise. Another group did muscle relaxation for the same amount of time as those practising Transcendental Meditation.

Over the course of three months, the group that learned Transcendental Meditation showed significant reduction of high blood pressure compared to non-significant changes in the two control groups.

'This was the first of several studies that Dr Schneider and others have done showing very profoundly the reduction of high blood pressure through the Transcendental Meditation Programme,' Dr Dillbeck said.
