ADHD in women: Is there a role for meditation?
by Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D.

On 27 May 2011 The Huffington Post reported:
Widely known as a disorder affecting children, ADHD is also 'extremely common in adults'--40% of whom are women. Renowned psychiatrist Dr Norman Rosenthal treats many women who are under enormous stress balancing family, household, and job. 'Stress creates more anxiety, which compounds the ADHD, and that makes life more stressful.' In addition to stimulant drugs and coaching, Dr Rosenthal suggests 'a third component to the treatment program--some form of stress reduction'--one of the most potent forms of which, he says, is the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of health.
'So potent is TM as a stress reducer that it has reliably been shown to reduce blood pressure, can reverse early stage blood vessel disease, and can actually boost longevity, according to two controlled studies,' Dr Rosenthal explains. 'I suggest that the same de-stressing powers may be invaluable to an adult (or child) struggling with both ADHD and a lifestyle of rushing, running and juggling that is conductive to ADHD.'
Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D. is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School and the author of ''Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation'' (Tarcher Penguin, 2011).
