New Delhi: The notion that exponents of modern medicines are presenting to the world is that it is nearly impossible to cure diabetes. But this myth was debunked by the chairman of Maharishi Ayurveda Private Limited (MAPL), Dr Anand Shrivastava, in a recent seminar on diabetes in New Delhi.

According to Dr Shrivastava, the holistic approach of Ayurveda is capable of curing this deadly disease, which in recent times has assumed the proportions of an epidemic. This belief was strengthened by many others in the seminar, organized on the premises of Maharishi Ayurveda Hospital, which is the only Ayurveda Hospital in North India and second in India to have been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH).

Anand Shrivastava said that the focus of modern medicines is to control the blood sugar level, rather than going into the roots of the problem. But the irony is that these medicines are not even capable of controlling the sugar level, and that is why more and diabetics are now relying on injections of insulin.

Only the holistic approach of Ayurveda, which includes Transcendental Meditation, yoga, Panchkarma (detoxification and rejuvenation therapy), and dietary habits according to nature can be an answer to this disease, he said. These can strengthen those parts of the body which are responsible for diabetes. He said that at the core of this disease is the lifestyle of the people.

Addressing the seminar, the world-renowned exponent of Ayurveda, Dr Raju, said that diabetes is the result of the distorted lifestyle which has badly affected good dietary habits and sleep. The result is that even 10-year-olds are now also becoming diabetic. He said geriatrics, on which modern science is now focusing, is actually an Ayurveda rasayan which can be a substitute to insulin.

Expressing his view, Vaidya Balendu Shekhar Dwedi said that diabetes is the result of blocking of certain sources in the body, which can be cured though Panchkarma. He said that certain treatments of Panchkarma therapy are quite useful in removing these blockages.

The role of yoga in curing diabetes was elaborated by Yogacharya Sanjay Solanki who said that certain yogasanas like mundku, mastasya, mayur, kati, garuda, shalabh, etc are useful in curing diabetes.

Elaborating on the dietary habits for diabetics, Dr. Vishakha Sandhu of Maharishi Ayurveda Hospital said that people suffering from diabetes must focus on certain dietary routines which, if properly followed, can win half the battle.

Describing the efficacy of Maharishi Ayurveda medicines, Dr Abha Saxena said that research studies have proved that Maharishi Ayurveda's Glucomap product can control the sugar level without any side-effects, protecting cardiovascular health and the nervous system from degenerative changes.

Dr Anand Shrivastava also inaugurated a diabetes clinic in the hospital, which he said is a gift to the people of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), where according to one estimate, about one-third of the population is suffering from diabetes. Around 62 per cent of these people are on insulin.

Dr. Dharamveer, Dr. Anand Kumari and Apurva Shrivastava also expressed their views on the occasion. (A.E.N)
