Dr Oz show: The Raj expert Candace Badgett presents ancient Ayurvedic approaches to weight loss

Dr. Mehmet Oz invited Ayurveda experts to come on his award-winning Dr. Oz show Friday, May 11, to share with the audience 'ancient Ayurvedic secrets' to lose weight and improve their health.

Following a talk by another expert on beneficial effects of certain foods, tastes, and spices to support weight loss as well as overall health, Ms. Badgett discussed traditional Ayurvedic approaches to losing weight.

Her presentation featured demonstrations by Ayurvedic technicians of three treatments for selected audience members, including Dr. Oz, there in the TV studio. She explained that these three treatments—Udvartana, Swedana, and Shirodhara—are known to improve digestion, remove toxins, nourish the tissues, and reduce stress, which disrupts normal bodily functions causing weight gain.

An imbalance in Vata (in Ayurveda, one of three fundamental biological principles governing the physiology) is almost always at the root of excess weight, Ms. Badgett said. She explained that Udvartana treatment utilizes a friction massage of herbalized oil mixed with chickpea flour, which heats the tissues and removes the appearance of cellulite.

Swedana, the second treatment demonstrated on the show, is usually taken after Abhyanga, an oil massage. The steam allows the oil to penetrate deeply into the tissues, Ms. Badgett explained, helping to remove toxins that disrupt hormones, impede proper communication between cells in the body, and are usually responsible for weight gain.

''The removal of toxins is absolutely crucial to a successful
weight-loss program,'' Candace Badgett explains to Dr Oz.
About the third treatment, administered to Dr. Oz himself during the show, Candace Badgett described Shirodhara as a stream of warm herbalized oil rhythmically poured back and forth across the forehead. This treatment deeply relaxes the mind and body; it is a gentle yet powerful means of removing stress and fatigue, she said, and also enlivens the ''happiness hormones.''

Dr. Oz was pleasantly surprised and described the experience as ''such a spectacular feeling having the oil rushing up your scalp. . . . It is a very soothing experience . . . . it is a life-changing experience. I recommend any of you who have the ability to try this out at least once. This is so cool as it goes back and forth.''

Continuing to lie on the table, Dr. Oz began to close out that segment of the show. ''I really appreciate it, wonderful job,'' he said, thanking Candace Badgett for her presentation. To the audience he said, ''Be right back, everybody''—and then told the Ayurvedic technician to ''keep going, it feels good.''
