27 May 2012
At the third venue in his recent international tour to present the new paradigm of health offered by Maharishi Ayurveda, Robert Schneider, MD, FACC, Dean of Maharishi College of Perfect Health at Maharishi University of Management, addressed the ninth annual conference of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association in Seattle, Washington. NAMA is the major organization of western Ayurveda practitioners and teachers in the US.
The topic of Dr Schneider's presentation was how to gain total heart health from the perspective of Maharishi Ayurveda. It was titled, 'The Maharishi Ayurveda Approach to Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease: Consciousness, Mind, Body, and Environment in a Scientific Framework'.
In the conference agenda, Dr Schneider's presentation was described as follows:
'Three domains contribute to cardiovascular health: mind, body, and environment. These in turn have their basis in consciousness, also called Atman or the Unified Field. This holistic view of Ayurveda includes a comprehensive theoretical framework based in Vedic and modern science and diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for each of these domains. This presentation will review scientific research that supports the theoretical paradigm and specific effects of this model for psychological, physical, and social health—contributing to cardiovascular health with prevention and treatment. Discussion will include meditation, herbal preparations, panchakarma, Vastu, Jyotish, and collective consciousness—all a part of a comprehensive programme for cardiovascular and total health.'
Dr. Schneider based his presentation on the pre-eminent textbook of Ayurveda, Charak Samhita. Charak explains that the heart is closely connected to the mind and consciousness. Therefore, for health and well-being of the heart, one has to gain a settled state of awareness.
In addition to the effects of the Transcendental Meditation Technique on heart health, Dr Schneider elaborated practical programmes of diet, nutritional supplements, and behavioural routines from Maharishi Ayurveda to restore balance to blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and other risk factors for heart disease. Charak also describes how epidemics of disease may be caused by stress in collective consciousness.
Dr Schneider therefore included a discussion of environmental factors and chronobiology according to Maharishi Ayurveda, as well as its approach to raising the level of coherence in collective consciousness.
Reviewing his recent experience, Dr Schneider summarized his impression that medical professionals and the general public are waking up globally in their recognition of the nonphysical basis of health. Technologies to access the inner basis of consciousness are beginning to be demanded for prevention, treatment, and health promotion. As in other areas, such as education, business and rehabilitation, there is wider recognition of the validation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's programmes to meet the needs of individuals and society.
Global Good News will continue to report on the recent series of presentations by Dr Robert Schneider on Maharishi Ayurveda.
