Graduates from the first teacher training course in Maharishi Yoga Asanas are ready to teach the 16-lesson course in this subject in centres offering the Transcendental Meditation Programme, and also for the public. To this end, the nine new teachers, an international group representing seven different countries, will hold courses around the world this coming summer and autumn.

Maharishi Yoga Asanas are part of the complete knowledge of Yoga brought out by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. According to the course description, learning the practice of Yoga through the 16-lesson course gives a comprehensive understanding of the nature of Yoga—the unification of individual and cosmic life—as well as practical training in Yoga postures (Asana) and breathing exercises (Pranayama). These promote integration of mind and body, supporting health by bringing life into harmony with Natural Law.

About the Asanas, Maharishi said, 'The time spent on Yoga Asanas is a golden time of the day. And it is interesting to note that this state of natural flexibility is characterized by bliss and steadiness of the body and mind. . . . Practice of Yoga Asanas is a must in the daily routine.'

The Maharishi Yoga Asanas course is part of the curriculum at Maharishi University of Management, the description of which further explains:

'This practical course presents the knowledge and experience of enlivening the unified state of consciousness, or Yoga, through the physiological approach of Yoga Asanas. Maharishi has revived the essential understanding that Yoga means unified level of consciousness or Transcendental Consciousness, and that Yoga, one of the 40 aspects of the Vedic Literature, provides the technologies to unfold that experience.

'The physical postures of Yoga Asanas are traditional positions that enliven the connection between mind and body, consciousness and physiology. When done properly, Maharishi Yoga Asanas help dissolve stress and give the experience of settledness and expansion in the direction of the experience of pure consciousness, or Yoga. This unique practical course includes regular practice of Maharishi Yoga Asanas as well as the understanding of their specific effects on the mind and body.'

In the teacher training course, which was held in MERU, Holland, the new teachers of Maharishi Yoga Asanas were taught, over 16 lessons, how to instruct others in the correct practice of Yoga. They received thorough training in teaching the 16-lesson course on Yoga Asana, demonstrating the postures, and knowledge about the influence of each posture on the physiology. The teachers learned about human physiology and basic anatomy, including which muscles are involved in each asana pose. In addition, they learned about the connection between asanas and health, through the ancient knowledge of Ayurveda.

One of the teachers remarked on this connection between health and Maharishi Yoga Asanas.

He said, 'One of the reasons why Maharishi Yoga Asanas are so beneficial, we've been looking through scientific research, is that they improve digestion, which is really vital in Maharishi Ayurveda because your digestive system nourishes all your physiology . . . and you will have a very strong and vital body.'

Another teacher said that Maharishi Yoga Asanas 'balance automatically all the main things which are responsible for our happiness, for our health. . . . Basically you become a doctor to yourself.'

The upcoming courses will be held in many locations around the world, offering this knowledge and practice to a wide range of people. Course locations and dates include:

17 - 23 June 2012 Antrim, NH, USA

29 June 2012 University of British Columbia, Canada
