Latin America: Effective meditation techniques become core of rehabilitation

The centres of Hogares Claret, a foundation based in Colombia, are dedicated to providing rehabilitation for children and families affected by drug addiction.
The activities of Fundacion Hogares Claret's founder, Father Gabriel Mejia, are 'precious activities for the nation', said a Transcendental Meditation teacher in the region in a recent report.
Father Mejia's centres care for thousands of underprivileged children throughout Colombia, Latin America, and many countries in the Caribbean.
When Father Mejia founded the centres, he initially used traditional rehabilitation methods, but about ten years ago began to incorporate alternative therapies like yoga and Transcendental Meditation. With the success of these therapies in improving the children's physical and mental health, his focus on utilizing them has intensified.
Many centres in the past ten years have offered Transcendental Meditation. Now, wherever Father Mejia's rehabilitation programmes are offered, he is also beginning to offer participants courses in the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme.
'Before it was only in the main centres, but now [Father Mejia] wants to offer this everywhere, on the basis of the great success of the programme,' commented the Transcendental Meditation teacher. And each new course seems to bring a greater degree of success.
'Every time we hold a ''Sidhi'' course, the quality of the experience and the rehabilitation level in the boys and girls is much higher than the previous one.'
Bolstered by this, the advanced meditation programmes have become a valuable part of Hogares Claret's rehabilitation process.
'Over the last five or six years,' the teacher said, 'the buildup of this programme, its success, its quality, its value for the children have become so important that Father Mejia feels it is really becoming the core of this rehabilitation and his approach to bring a better life to people in difficulties.'
