During Dr Norman Rosenthal's recent speaking tour of London, the renowned psychiatrist, mental health researcher, and bestselling author displayed a many faceted appeal that enabled him to bring his message to very different audiences, with very different interests.

Dr Rosenthal achieved international recognition for identifying Seasonal Affective Disorder and pioneering its treatment with light therapy. More recently he has suggested that, in addition to its many other benefits, Transcendental Meditation can also help in the treatment of SAD. Two of his books, Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation and Winter Blues – Everything you need to know to beat Seasonal Affective Disorder, have been recently updated and re-released in the UK.

At 'Alternatives', a forum for those interested in contemporary spirituality that regularly meets in St James's Church, Piccadilly, around a hundred members of the public heard him explain how the growth of higher states of consciousness brought about through Transcendental Meditation is underpinned by measurable changes in the physiology.

A small audience in Watkins Books (an independent bookshop near Leicester Square that specialises in esoteric literature) listened to him read people's personal stories of healing and growth through Transcendental Meditation, and learned how the technique could benefit the lives of SAD sufferers, transforming winter into a time of great creativity.

At yet another event, psychotherapists were invited to hear Dr Rosenthal by 'Out of Context', a group that campaigns to counteract the stigma that is all too often associated with mental illness. He was joined by two former British Army soldiers who gave moving accounts of how Transcendental Meditation has proved invaluable in helping them to overcome post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr Rosenthal was the senior researcher on a pilot study published in the June 2011 issue of Military Medicine, in which veterans of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars showed a 50 percent reduction in their PTSD symptoms after just eight weeks of practising the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation technique.

Dr Rosenthal was interviewed in depth by two members of the media: Johnny Walker, a former BBC DJ, and Steve Watkins, a journalist who blogs for The Independent on mental health issues.

Sharing something of great value does more than benefit the other person; it can also be personally rewarding, as Dr Rosenthal himself has indicated. As an observer commented, perhaps it is not surprising, therefore, that this charming and knowledgeable expert delighted and satisfied a wide variety of audiences while continuing to radiate fulfilment. At the end of his hectic ten-day tour that also took in Dublin and Stockholm, he looked as fresh as on the day he arrived.
