In a recent talk titled ''Transcending Addictions: The Role of Transcendental Meditation in the Recovery Process,'' Norman Rosenthal, MD, spoke about the meditation technique's practical application in addiction recovery.

The talk was given in Washington, DC, at a conference on Stress, Meditation, Addictions, and Self-Recovery that featured four prominent speakers including Dr Rosenthal.

Dr Rosenthal is a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine; as a researcher for over 20 years at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the US, he led the team that first described Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and pioneered its treatment with light therapy. Dr Rosenthal is the author or coauthor of over two hundred professional articles and five popular books.

He was introduced to the audience by Stuart Rothenberg, MD, director of the American Association of Health Professionals Practicing the Transcendental Meditation Program.*

'Dr Rosenthal was awarded the prestigious Anna Monika Foundation research prize for his contribution to research in the treatment of depression,' Dr Rothenberg said. 'He has been listed as one of the best doctors in America and one of the country's top psychiatrists.'

In his speech at the conference, Dr Rosenthal focused on the role of transcendence in the treatment and prevention of addictions.

He started his speech by acknowledging that addictions are complex behavioural problems with many influential factors involved.

'Of course the solutions are equally complicated and multi-factorial,' Dr Rosenthal said, 'but what is really fascinating to me, and what we are here to talk about tonight, is how one particular technique can make a major difference in helping to contain, control, and bring order to some of these chaotic conditions.'

Dr Rosenthal spoke of Transcendental Meditation (TM), a technique he wrote about extensively in his New York Times bestselling book, Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation.

How does Transcendental Meditation affect addictive behaviour? According to Dr Rosenthal, the technique has a powerful effect on the brain, increasing 'the soothing alpha rhythms' and the coherent functioning of the prefrontal cortex.

Global Good News will continue to feature Dr Rosenthal's presentation and those of other conference speakers.

* Dr Rothenberg is also national medical director and director of post-graduate medical education of Maharishi Ayurveda Association of America (MAAA).
