British military veterans call for David Lynch Foundation's Warrior Wellness programme in UK
by Dr Peter Warburton

17 December 2012
Leighton Stagg and Steve Bindon, two former soldiers in the British Army who spoke of their experiences with Transcendental Meditation at a recent conference in London marking World Mental Health Day, were scheduled to speak not long after at a gala fund raising event of the David Lynch Foundation UK, at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London.
On that day (24 November) Operation Warrior Wellness was to be launched in the UK with their help, with funds raised to be used to support programmes to teach Transcendental Meditation to veterans.
'This is a timely initiative,' commented Dr Peter Warburton, Chairman of Maharishi Foundation UK, 'as statistics show an epidemic of stress amongst British military veterans: 30% suffer from PTSD, a significant number are in prison or on probation, suicides are escalating, and 25% of homeless people are veterans. There is a growing body of research on the benefits of Transcendental Meditation for veterans. The first study published in 1985 showed its benefits in the treatment of what, at that time, was called post-Vietnam adjustment.'
A pilot study published last year in the academic journal Military Medicine found that Transcendental Meditation helped to alleviate symptoms of PTSD and improved quality of life amongst veterans. Just recently, the US government's Department of Defense awarded a $2 million grant to the government's Department of Veterans Affairs and Maharishi University of Management jointly, for studying the effects of Transcendental Meditation on veterans with PTSD.
'It is clearly time to bring this programme to the attention of the British government and public,' Dr Warburton said. 'The media heap great praise on the British men and women involved in combat in Afghanistan and elsewhere. But the truth of the matter is that they are exposed to abnormal levels of stress beyond that which the human nervous system can manage.
'Currently, they are offered little to help them recuperate and lead normal lives. Now, there is the opportunity to do so, and Leighton and Steve are going to make sure that everyone hears about it.'
